We all know how important it is for children to get the right balance of nutrients whilst they are growing up, and fruit and vegetables are a vital part of a child’s diet. But, as most parents are well aware, it can sometimes be a struggle to get children to eat these foods.

Celebrity chef Aldo Zilli is a father of three, so he knows the importance of incorporating fruit and vegetables into children’s diet. Aldo launched his baby food range, Baby Zilli, to introduce a variety of fruit and vegetables into children’s diets. All of the Baby Zilli products are created from recipes that Aldo has tried and tested on his own children, and they love eating them.

To set children up for a lifetime of healthy eating, follow Aldo’s tips to encourage children to eat good foods without kicking up a fuss.

Here are Aldo’s Top Ten Tips for getting your kids to eat fruit and vegetables…

1. Plan meals together with your children; if they help you create the menu, they will be excited to taste the results.

2. Give the kids two vegetable options to choose from at dinnertime; if they get to choose themselves they are more willing to eat their greens.

3. Grate carrots and courgettes and add to beef mince to sneak some vegetables into a burger, lasagne or shepherd’s pie.

4. Fruit smoothies are a tasty way to get your kids eating lots of healthy fruit. And you can even add hidden vegetables: try carrots or sweet potato in a strawberry smoothie.

5. If you have a garden, get a small vegetable patch and allow your child to get involved in growing the vegetables that you serve.

6. Children learn by example; let them see you eating and enjoying a variety of fruit and vegetables, and they will be curious to try the same foods.

7. Forget the table manners for a while: let your children play with their food. Make smiley vegetable faces on your child’s plate, make up stories and sing songs. If your child is having fun they won’t kick up such a fuss about eating the vegetables.

8. Provide a selection of healthy, tasty sauces for your child to dip their fruit and veg in; this will distract from any taste they don’t like and make eating more fun. Try hummus, cottage cheese, yoghurt or guacamole.

9. Vegetables blended into a soup are undetectable to most children; they will love the taste and be left none the wiser that their meal is full of healthy veg.

10. Have some vegetables prepared and available at all times; if there is only veg to snack on while your child grows hungry waiting for dinner, they will eat them without a fuss.

We hope you enjoy trying out Aldo’s brilliant tips!

Buon Appetito!

Eating out has become a strong part of most people’s social life, however, many parents find that dining out with their young children can be a stressful experience

Celebrity chef Aldo Zilli, believes that children should be truly welcome in restaurants and that eating out is an important part of fostering a healthy attitude towards food from a young age.

Here are Aldo’s Ten Top Tips on Dining Out with Young Children to help parents find the confidence to introduce their kids to the eating out culture…

1. Taking your kids out as much as possible is the key – the more they visit restaurants, the more comfortable they will be and they will better understand how to behave at the table.

2. Always make preparations so that you have your child’s favourite toy, book or an activity for them to do if they start getting restless. At my Soho restaurant Zilli Fish, we provide crayons and a colouring in pad, but if the restaurant you are visiting does not do this, then make sure you bring your own.

3. Be aware of other diners – if your baby is causing disruption in the restaurant and disturbing other guests, do take them outside to calm down for five minutes.

4. If your child is old enough to run around, do explain to them the importance of sitting at the table throughout the meal. Having distractions such as the colouring in book mentioned above helps keep them in their seat. Kids running through the restaurant when there are waiters carrying hot food is dangerous. Do walk your child round quietly if they want to explore – it’s good to be inquisitive!

5. Teaching your children good table manners from an early age is an important part of their social education. Instead of nagging your child about not playing with their food, shift the emphasis onto praising them when they show good table manners.

6. I believe we shouldn’t dumb down to children about food – don’t lower your standards for your kids. Dine out where you would actually enjoy eating, and take them too. On our children’s menu we have dishes like gnocchi with pesto, so that the kids don’t feel like they are eating anything too different to their parents. Even my Baby Zilli range has a diverse range of vegetables and fruit, and delicious recipes like Fishy Dishy salmon and potato – it gets kids used to different flavours from the word go!

7. Forcing children to eat what they don’t like is counterproductive (however much you want them to eat something adventurous) but do emphasise that a simple ‘no thank you’ is better than a screaming match. I have the rule that everything should be tried at least once before refusing it.

8. If there is a good children’s menu, let them choose from it themselves, they are more likely to make an effort to eat all the food and enjoy it, if it was their own decision.

9. Pick your restaurant well. If you have a small child, call in advance and check that they have high chairs and if they are family friendly. At Zilli Fish we offer my organic Baby Zilli baby food range to our very little guests, and under fives eat for free with my specially designed kiddy menu.

10. If you aren’t comfortable taking your kids to a restaurant, they will respond to that uneasiness. Trust your instincts. You know whether your child can make it through a white table-clothed, quiet evening or not.

Finally, all parents have had good and bad dining out experiences with their kids. Don’t give up. Even after a disaster, try again. Make sure your child knows the proper behaviour expected of him / her before you get to the restaurant.

Aldo comments: “As both a father and a restaurant owner, I believe it is important to take your kids to restaurants from an early age as it gives them a positive attitude towards food and the enjoyable social element of eating together.

Both of my younger kids Twiggy and Rocco come to Zilli Fish regularly and although they can often be noisy (all kids are!), they really get excited about the food and about the whole dining experience.”

Having a child that’s a fussy eater can be a huge source of worry for parents as they need to ensure their child is eating all the right nutrients and goodness but want to avoid a power struggle every dinner time.

Celebrity chef, Aldo Zilli, is a father of three and so has had his own share of dealing with fussy eaters. He launched his organic baby food range, Baby Zilli, to help combat picky eating from a very early age by combining a diverse range of delicious ingredients in each convenient pouch. Each product in the Baby Zilli range has been created from a recipe Aldo used on his own children and so have been tried and tested on the real baby Zillis!

Aldo says: “Fussy eating is usually a phase children go through, and frustrating though it is, the key is to stay calm and use some of my practical tips below to help turn meal time battles into a fun and enjoyable experience for the family.”

Here are Aldo’s Top 10 Tips for Fussy Eaters…

1. First of all, it’s important to only buy the foods that you want your child to be eating. If there’s no junk food in the house – how can they eat it?

2. Giving the food exciting names helps to make children more interested in what they are eating. We’ve just launched some new flavours including Tutti Frutti and Zilli Greens, designed to make mealtimes fun. It sounds silly but sing songs, pretend you’re rocket launching the food into their mouths – whatever makes the concept of eating more enjoyable to your own child.

3. Serve up food in little portions on their plates and add more when each portion is finished – this makes the process so much more manageable to your child, as large portions are off-putting to fussy eaters.

4. Don’t try to coerce or bribe or plead with your child to eat. Even if you’re desperate for them to finish their food, remain calm and pretend you’re not interested, as making a fuss often has the opposite effect!

5. If the kitchen table has become your ‘battle ground’, change the scenery. Have some food in the playroom or with their tea set plates to make eating fun.

6. Share meal times with another child that is a good eater. Don’t disapprove of your own child but throughout the whole meal praise all good eating, your child will see this and will naturally want to seek your approval too.

7. Be positive about food, excited by new ingredients and eager to try different flavours – your child will pick up on this enthusiasm and hopefully learn the same attitude. The Baby Zilli range is ‘good enough for mamma and papa to eat’ so try a spoonful here and there to lead by example.

8. Eat at the same time as your baby, again your child will be seeking your approval through you leading by example as they watch you eat and enjoy your food.

9. When they are old enough, encourage them to eat the food themselves, this further allows the children to be in control of their own diets and food habits. You will notice that they also want to be ‘grown up’ and eating what mummy and daddy are eating – don’t dumb down to them but allow them to try new flavours when they are older. I make ‘Baby Capuccinos’ when my children come and visit me in the restaurant now, this is just frothed milk but the kids feel they are really grown up by drinking them and take a positive interest in food.

10. I believe that from day one we can set the foundations for our children’s eating behaviour for the rest of their life. So make sure they try a diverse range of flavours and ingredients to give them a wide appreciation of food and a ‘taste education’ so they can appreciate good wholesome food as they grow.

Buon Appetito!
